Diary card questions
What the diary card can do, in short answers. The first part is for you if you fill in a card. The second is for clinicians who run a diary card program.
Jump to Using the card or Running a program. For step-by-step help, see the diary card tutorials.
Using the card
How do I start the diary card?
Ask your therapist to start it with you in a session. Your clinician sets up the account with you and walks through each box: why it is there and how it helps the session and the chain analysis. Your first diary card shows the steps.
Who can use the diary card?
Adults 18 and over only.
How long does a card take?
The first one takes about 8 to 10 minutes. Once you know the flow, 3 to 5.
Do I have to fill out every section?
No. Skip the sections that don't apply to your day.
Which emotions can I rate?
Hurt, Sadness, Anger, Fear/Anxiety, Joy, Shame, Guilt, Jealousy, Envy, Disgust and Love, each from 0 to 5. Hurt covers physical or emotional pain in one rating.
Do I re-enter my target behaviors every day?
No. Your target behaviors carry over to the next day's card, unticked, so you only tick the ones that came up.
Can I log an urge I didn't act on?
Yes. When you tick a target behavior, mark whether you acted on it or only felt the urge.
What if I start a card for a day I already filled in?
Okaya takes you to the card you already started for that day, so you can finish it or change it.
What if I miss a day?
Pick it back up the next day. If you miss three days in a row, we text you once a day for up to three days. The texts stop as soon as you fill in a card.
Can I get a reminder to fill in my card?
Yes. Diary card reminders are separate from check-in reminders, so each can have its own days and times. Set them in Settings or ask Sanora in the chat. Updating your reminders shows the steps.
Can I open the diary card like an app?
Yes. Add Okaya to your phone's home screen and it opens in one tap. It runs in your phone's browser, so there's no app store download. Add Okaya to your home screen shows the steps.
Do I have to use the chat?
No. The diary card works on its own, from the DBT tab in the top menu. The check-in with Sanora is there if you want it.
Where is my weekly summary?
Open the DBT tab. Right under Your DBT Journey, tap the Your weekly summary card. Save your week as a PDF shows the steps.
Can my summary cover the days since my last session?
Yes. Tap Since… and pick the date of your last session. The summary covers every day from then through today, and the printout shows the dates. Custom range covers any other stretch, up to 90 days. Save your week as a PDF shows the steps.
Can I change a note before I share the PDF?
Yes. When you tap Save as PDF, you can edit each day's notes for that printout. Your saved diary cards don't change.
How do I share my summary with my therapist?
You decide. Bring it to session on your phone or as a PDF, or upload the PDF to your clinic's secure portal. Email and text aren't secure for health information. Okaya never sends the summary for you. Save your week as a PDF shows the steps.
What if I need help right now?
If you are in danger now, call 911, or call or text 988. Your crisis plan with your therapist stays as it is.
Running a program
Can I offer the diary card to my DBT clients?
Yes, when your practice sets up the client program with Okaya on a short call. Clients use it by choice.
How should I introduce the diary card?
In a session. Set up the account with the client, then walk through each box: why it is there and how it helps the session and the chain analysis. A link sent on its own does much less.
Where do clients find the weekly summary?
In the DBT tab, under Your DBT Journey, on the Your weekly summary card. The tutorial Save your week as a PDF, on tutorials.okaya.me, shows how on a phone or a computer.
Can the summary start on the day of the last session?
Yes. The client taps Since… and picks the date of their last session, and the summary covers every day from then through today. Custom range covers any other stretch, up to 90 days.
Where do a client's own target behaviors show on the summary?
Under What else showed up, in Behaviors you added to your diary. Each behavior lists the days the client checked it. Self-harm urges and suicidal thoughts show first, under Safety.
Which emotions are on the card?
Hurt, Sadness, Anger, Fear/Anxiety, Joy, Shame, Guilt, Jealousy, Envy, Disgust and Love. Hurt covers physical or emotional pain in one rating.
Can I see how a client's emotions moved across the week?
Yes. Daily detail draws a small line for each emotion across the days on the summary, so you can see what rose and what eased.
How do clients share the summary with me?
The client decides. They bring it to session on their phone or as a PDF, or upload the PDF to your clinic's portal. Okaya never sends it for them, and our tutorial asks clients not to send it by email or text.
Can a client use the diary card without the chat?
Yes. The diary card works on its own, from the DBT tab in the top menu. The check-in with Sanora is there if the client wants it.
How much work is it for clinicians?
More at the start: setting up each client's account and helping clients who are less used to apps. After that, the client's week arrives already written down, so the session can start from it.
